A Guide to Choose a PCIe USB Card

As more laptops, desktop computers, and devices continue to adopt USB 3.0, the more you should consider getting a PCIe USB card, especially if you own an older computer. Even if you have a new computer with USB 3.0, a PCI Express (PCIe) card will be helpful if you need additional ports. The card provides a quick and cost-effective way to upgrade your system, whether you need USB 3.0 or additional ports.

It is easy to use a PCIe USB card, but you need to decide how many ports you need. You can find PCIe cards with at least two ports and as many as seven ports. There are also four and five-port USB 3.0 PCIe cards. If you are on a budget and you need only a few additional USB 3.0 ports, consider a two-port PCIe card. The more ports the card has, the higher its price will be. With a two-port USB 3.0 PCIe card, you get transfer rates of up to 5 Gigabytes per second. However, keep in mind that the actual transmission speed may be limited by the setting of your device, which is connected to it.

Before buying a card, make sure that it is compatible with your operating system. A PCIe USB card lets you update your Windows PC or laptop to USB 3.0. It should be backward compatible, too, particularly with USB 1.1 and 2.0 devices, and older versions of Windows, like XP, Vista, 7, and 8. Take note that because of limitations on Windows XP and Vista, the real transfer speed will range between the speeds of USB 2.0 and 3.0. Rest assured, it is quick and easy to install.

You can also get a PCIe USB card that is cord-free. They come mostly in two and four-port variants. Their convenience lies on the fact that they do not require an additional power supply for normal operation and recognition.
